Field notes from a home bar, since 2021
We brew it before we recommend it.
Every kettle, grinder, and scale below has sat on our counter for at least three weeks. No press releases, no swag — just the gear worth your money, rated on how it actually performs, not how it photographs.
Why a dial, not a star rating
Five stars tells you nothing about a coffee tool — a kettle can be a "5" for control and a "2" for value. So instead we score every piece of gear on where it sits between "entry-level" and "obsessive," the same way you'd read a roast level. Light means beginner-friendly and forgiving. Dark means built for people who already own a refractometer.
This site earns a small commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you — that's what funds the coffee (and the gear) that makes these reviews possible.
Reading the dial
Light roast — beginner friendly, low fuss
Medium roast — some learning curve, worth it
Dark roast — built for the obsessive brewer
